The benefits of recess go beyond physical development.  Remember back to your childhood - playing outside free from adult intervention or organized sports - you figured out how to negotiate, solve problems, and play well with others.  Recess time continues to decline in our schools which is making way for issues in behavior, self-regulation, and the ability to feel a sense of control.
