About Us

Since 1883, Edward Street Child Services has worked towards ensuring young children have high quality early learning programs.  Quality guides our work, and partnerships and community collaboration drive it.

Our Mission

Edward Street Child Services collaborates to improve the quality and impact of early education and care, enhancing the development of young children and strengthening families in Central Massachusetts.

Our History

Our roots stretch deep into providing early childhood programming.

  • Established in 1883, our original organization, The Day Nursery, was the oldest operating child care center in Worcester.
  • The center was a collaborative initiative, lead by a group of faith-based organizations, after a community assessment determined the need for child care.
  • At the request of physicians, the agency moved from its original location to 10 Edward Street to care for children whose mothers were patients at Memorial Hospital for maternity and other services.
  • After 120 years of providing direct early education services, the Board of Directors voted to close the center, sell its assets, and begin a new chapter in leading quality programs for children.

This strategic shift enabled Edwards Street Child Services to expand its impact by supporting programs across our community. We remain focused on our original goals of improving the quality of early education, providing information and resources to parents, and helping the community understand the value of high quality early education.
